++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ABOUT HACK +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This is a version of the public domain program HACK (copyright (c)
Stichting Mathematisch Centrum, Amsterdam, 1984, 1985.) implemented
under AMIGADOS with the LATTICE C compiler.
There are two versions of HACK on this disk: a graphics version and a non-
graphics version. The graphics version is called HACK and the non-graphics
version is HACK1.0.1A. By default, all the icons use the graphics version.
If you wish to use the original text version then you must rename HACK to
something else (such as HACK1.0.1E) and then rename HACK1.0.1A to HACK.
Because HACK is quite large, you should copy this disk and then delete the
version of HACK that you do not want to use.
We are placing this version of HACK in the public domain. Please distribute
it to public bulletin boards, users groups, and individuals you feel would
enjoy it. If you do enjoy the program and would like to support further
development (and receive information on the latest updates) send a
contribution to John and his crew at the above address. We welcome
suggestions for improvements and upgrades.
The source is available for the original text version only by sending $6.00
to the above address.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ INSTALLING HACK +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Make a backup of this diskette and then delete the version of HACK that you
do not need!
HACK needs a number of work files. You should create a file called 'record'
to hold the high scores; it can be empty initially. Also create an empty
file called 'perm'. If a file called 'news' exists, the contents will be
displayed before the game starts. If you want to be able to save games,
create a directory called 'saved games'. If you copy this disk, then these
files will be set up for you. At any time you can empty out the high
scores file with the CLI command:
echo >record
HACK creates some work files on its own. Files of the form 'bones_nn', where
nn is a number, should be left on the disk for use in future games. Files
of the form <name>.nn are work files which should go away when you finish
your game.
You can use the Icon Editor 'HackIcon' to change any of the colors or
characters used by the graphics version of Hack. See the file
'hackicon.doc' for more information.
Hack gets its characters from the file CHARACTERS. If you are familiar
with the Unix or PC version of Hack, you may wish to use the partial
graphics character set. Monsters appear as the ASCII letters, as on the
other systems. To use this character set, rename the CHARACTERS file to
something else and rename CHARACTERS.ALPHA to CHARACTERS.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ PLAYING HACK ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
If you've played HACK under UNIX or some other environment, you won't have
any trouble with this version. Many of the commands are the same. Even if
you haven't, however, you can use the menus in AMIGA HACK. Just hold down
the right menu button and select the command. After you get to know the
commands, you will be able to use the keyboard commands. The keyboard
command equivalent for each menu selection is listed next to the selection.
Two commands you will want to know are '?' and '/'. '?' gives you a
summary of all commands. '/' will identify a character. In graphics mode,
all icons are displayed. Click on one with the left mouse button to identify
it. In non-graphics mode, type in the character you want identified.
Before you play, you might want to print out the files 'hh' and 'help'. 'hh'
is the file displayed with the '?' command; 'help' is the help file that
came with the original UNIX version of the file.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++ V 1.0.1E Enhancements ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
1) Improved Maze generation algorithm compliments of Don Kneller.
Hack should not run out of stack on the upper levels.
2) Graphics! Monsters not appear as graphic characters instead of
letters.
3) Smaller level files. This should allow saving a full game on a disk
without running out of space.
4) Minor bug fixes for situations that crashed Hack.
